AHA and Lourdes Team up to Fight Stroke

The American Heart Association/American Stroke Association and
Lourdes Hospital announced, their unique partnership to promote
healthier choices, awareness and prevention of heart disease and
stroke. The collaboration focuses more specifically on stroke
education through a variety of events and awareness
campaigns. 
The two organizations unveiled The Faces of Stroke
Gallery, an exhibit of photographs and stories of stroke
survivors and the healthcare team at Lourdes that serves as the
front line in preventing and treating stroke. The stories shared in
this Faces of Stroke Gallery demonstrate the strength, passion and
commitment of both survivors and members of the healthcare
community. The gallery will travel the community to
illustrate that stroke affects people of all ages and walks of
life. Following today's unveiling, the Gallery will be on
display at the AHA's Heartwalk on Saturday, April 25.
Also known as 'brain attack,' stroke is a disease that affects
the arteries leading to and within the brain. It is the
number three cause of death in the United States, behind diseases
of the heart and cancer; it is also the leading cause of disability
in men and women. hen stroke is a possibility, prompt
diagnosis and treatment can make all the difference in a favorable
outcome.
In 2005, Lourdes Hospital formed its Stroke Team, a
multi-disciplinary group represented by Neurology, two Nursing
Units, Emergency Department, Diagnostic Imaging (CT),
Rehabilitation, Laboratory, Cardiology, Care Management, Quality
Services and Lourdes Administration. The group established Acute
Stroke protocols for the Emergency Department and nursing
units.
In 2006, Lourdes was named a NYS Designated Stroke
Center. Each year, Lourdes continues to meet the
rigorous New York State Stroke measures and indicators.
Lourdes recently was awarded the American Heart
Association's Silver Award for the Get with the Guidelines
(GWTG) program.
