Golden Stethoscope Awarded
Tuesday, January 20, 2009
The semi-annual award is given to medical or allied
health staff who exemplify Lourdes' core values of service to the
poor, reverence, integrity, wisdom, creativity and
dedication.
The Golden Stethoscope Award was
presented at the November, 2008 General Staff Meeting to
Richard Simon, MD. Dr. Simon received the
following nomination:
"There have been instances over the
years where this physician had a patient in financial need that
needed surgery. He worked with the hospital to accommodate the
patient's needs by trying to lower the cost. He then would not
charge the patient for his portion.
He interacts with staff to make sure
that the surgical procedures run smoothly. He runs a tight ship and
expects excellence. He listens to staff ideas for saving time and
money, while ensuring the safety of each patient. He developed a
checklist of procedures he performs, to assist in training new
staff members before they can assist him unpreceptored.
He accounts for his own actions. He is
a surgeon who never loses his cool during intense surgical
situations. He always maintains a mature attitude.
Children are allowed to bring their
favorite stuffed animal into the OR for his surgeries. When they
wake up, they see that he has patched the eye of the animal that
corresponds with the patch that the child is wearing. He is truly
inspiring."
We recognize Dr. Simon for his dedication to his patients and
the way in which he exemplifies the mission and values of Lourdes.
Other nominees were : Suren Pathman, MD, Ghassem Mangouri, MD,
Janet Muhich, MD, Steven Spivak, DO and Carlos Martinez, MD.
