State-of-the-Art Cervical Cancer Screenings
The ThinPrep® Imaging
System provides increased screening productivity and
improved diagnostic performance to benefit women in the Southern
Tier.
The ThinPrep® Imaging System combines
revolutionary imaging technology with human interpretive expertise
to improve cervical cancer screening efficiency and performance.
The Lourdes Laboratory was the first in the area to
use the ThinPrep® Imaging System. Lourdes has been
offering the ThinPrep® Pap Test since 1997 and leverages the
ThinPrep® Imaging System as an enhancement to ThinPrep® Pap Test's
improved slide preparation for all cervical cancer screenings.
"Lourdes is committed to providing
patients with the best new technology to detect disease
early. The ThinPrep® Imaging System enables us to do that,"
said James Terzian, M.D. of Twin Tier Pathology Associates. "Using
the ThinPrep® Imaging System offers significant improvements over
previous screening technologies. We have verified that this
innovative System increases sensitivity in the detection of
abnormal cells. Making this technology the standard in our practice
was simply the right thing to do."
The ThinPrep® Pap Test is approved by
the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) as "significantly more
effective" than the conventional Pap smear for the detection of
cervical abnormalities and is the most widely used Pap test in the
U.S. The ThinPrep® Pap Test is a liquid-based test that employs a
fluid medium to collect and preserve cervical cells. The ThinPrep®
Imaging System is the first fully integrated, interactive computer
system that assists cytotechnologists and pathologists in the
primary screening of ThinPrep® Pap Test slides. Using a complex
algorithm, the System's computer pre-screens a slide and identifies
the most abnormal cells, allowing cytopathologists and
cytotechnologists to focus on the most important fields of
view. This feature allows for decreasing the false negative
rate and provides more sensitivity to detect positive results.
Accreditation
The laboratory is accredited by the New York State Department of
Health (NYSDOH) and College of American Pathologists (CAP).
